While the metric can be used to provide a general indication and first approximation of a country's competitive export strengths, it should be noted that applied national measures which affect competitiveness such as tariffs, non-tariff measures, subsidies and others are not taken into account in the RCA metric

The Productive Capacities Index (PCI) is built upon UNCTAD's framework to measure a country's ability to produce goods and services and foster growth through three pillars: productive resources, entrepreneurial capabilities, and production linkages. These pillars are further divided into eight categories including natural and human capital, energy, institutions, private sector, structural change, transport, and information technologies.
