This dataset includes quarterly business confidence index published by Bureau for Economic Research (BER).The composite RMB/BER Business Confidence Index (BCI) is the unweighted mean of five sectoral indices, namely that of manufactures, building contractors, retailers, wholesalers and new vehicle dealers. Business confidence can vary between 0 and 100, where 0 indicates an extreme lack of confidence, 50 neutrality and 100 extreme confidence. The Bureau for Economic Research  is one of the oldest economic research institutes in South Africa. It is part of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) at Stellenbosch University. The BER has built a local and international reputation for independent, objective and authoritative economic research and forecasting.

This dataset includes quarterly consumer confidence index published by Bureau for Economic Research (BER). Consumer confidence is expressed as a net balance, which is calculated as the percentage of respondents expecting an improvement / good time to buy durable goods less the percentage expecting a deterioration / bad time to buy durable goods.
Theoretically, the FNB/BER CCI can vary between –100 and 100, but the index has fluctuated between –33 (indicating an extreme lack of confidence) and +23 (indicating extreme confidence) since the BER started measuring consumer confidence comprehensively in 1982. The average of the index is +2 and could therefore be regarded as the neutral level.
