This dataset includes the Geopolitical Risk Index. Dario Caldara and Matteo Iacoviello developed this index as a measure of adverse geopolitical events and associated risks, based on the frequency of newspaper articles reporting on geopolitical tensions. The index tracks the evolution of geopolitical risk and its economic effects since 1900. It spikes during major historical events such as the two World Wars, the start of the Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and after 9/11. Higher geopolitical risk is linked to lower levels of investment, stock prices, and employment. It is also associated with a higher probability of economic disasters and greater downside risks to the global economy.
