## ¿Cómo sigue la película?

No sabemos exactamente el quién, el cómo y el cuándo. Pero cualquier plan que lleve a buen puerto debería:
- Eliminar la monetización del déficit (desde el día 1)
- Tender al equilibrio fiscal (y rápido)
- Ajustar precios relativos (mejor temprano que tarde)
- Levantar el cepo (lo más pronto posible)
- Desactivar la "bomba de Leliqs"
- Ojo con las "deudas ocultas" (importaciones, deuda flotante)
- Ojo con las deudas no licuables (CER/DLK)

## Coyuntura macro local: Atado con alambre

Modelo de crisis de primera generación: con TCN fijo, déficit fiscal financiado con emisión hace perder reservas hasta que no alcanzan. Resultado: corrida y flotación.

Particularidades de nuestra coyuntura:
- El cepo gana tiempo pero no evita la crisis
- Las reservas se pierden por otro lado (CC vs CK)
- Financiamiento del déficit forzado por regulación (cepo + disposiciones BCRA)
- Incentivos desalineados: necesidades macro vs deseos políticos

**Más que "Plan Ganar", se trata de un "Plan Llegar". Aguantar hasta dic-23 y ahí encarar las reformas de fondo.**

# How to integrate Alphacast with Excel for Mac?

## Step 1. Getting the URL link from the dataset or pipeline

You will need the complete URL for the dataset that you want to integrate, which you can find by clicking the Download button and then copying (not downloading!) the URL attached to a **TSV file**.

Alternatively, you can use the Data Snapshot link from any pipeline. Remember to choose the TSV link.

## Step 2. Creating a query file

Open a Word file and paste the URL link. Save the document with the “.txt” extension (text without format), not as a Word file. When asked about text codification, choose MS-DOS.

After saving the file, manually change its extension from “.txt” to “.iqy”.

## Step 3. Integrating with Excel

Open a new spreadsheet, go to “Data”, then “Import External Data” and click on “Execute Web Query”. Excel will require you to choose a query file (those with “.iqy” extension), so search for the file you generated previously and open it.

That’s it! Excel should have successfully integrated an Alphacast dataset/pipeline to your spreadsheet. Remember to click on “Refresh” to obtain data updates when needed.

# Automatización de Análisis de Coyuntura – Clase 3
## Integración con Python, Excel, Google Drive y Power BI

Los **basics de Alphacast** fueron cubiertos en la clase 1, que pueden encontrar en los siguientes links ([contenidos](https://www.alphacast.io/p/luciano/insights/2022-7-3-coPzOc), [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIQJMkhqqsA)).

En la clase 2 se cubrieron temas relacionados con el **data flow: cómo usar los pipelines y transformar los datos** dentro de la plataforma. **Hoy vamos a ver cómo integrar Alphacast a otras herramientas** de uso cotidiano en el proceso de análisis. La idea es explicar cómo hacerlo mediante ejemplos, construyendo sobre la base de lo que hacemos en cada sección. 

El miércoles 7 de septiembre será el último encuentro, donde veremos una intro a Web Scrapping con Python.

### 1. Integración con Google Drive

La integración con Google Drive nos permite trabajar localmente y actualizar datasets en la plataforma de manera ágil y sencilla. El detalle del paso a paso lo pueden revisar [aquí](https://www.alphacast.io/p/luciano/insights/2022-2-3-GgrRgP).

Vamos a cargar un dataset ya preparado de antemano, con una serie de variables:

- IPC INDEC histórico
- IPC INDEC nuevo
- IPCs provinciales (CABA, Córdoba, Mendoza, Neuquén, Santa Fe, San Luis y Tucumán)

La idea es armar un IPC histórico confiable, que evite los problemas que tienen los datos del INDEC durante la época de la intervención (aprox. 2006-15). Vamos a cargar este dataset a un repositorio creado para la ocasión.

### 2. Integración con Python

En esta etapa vamos a usar la librería de Alphacast para descargar el dataset que integramos vía Google Drive anteriormente. Con ese dataset vamos a empalmar series para crear un IPC histórico sin cortes temporales y cargaremos el resultado nuevamente en la plataforma, como un dataset nuevo.

La documentación de la librería la encuentran [aquí](https://alphacast-python-sdk.readthedocs.io/en/latest/reference.html). Quienes quieran la Jupyter notebook usada para la clase, nos la pueden pedir sin problemas.

**Tip: Este procesamiento con Python se puede hacer con los pipelines de Alphacast!**

### 3. Integración con Excel

## ¿Inflación sin depreciación?

**La inflación está en el tope de la agenda económica (¿cuándo no?). El INDEC reportó un 6.7% MoM en marzo, acumulando un 16.1% en lo que va del 2022. Abril viene algo más "tranquilo", léase, apuntando en torno al 5% MoM**, a base de mínimos aumentos en precios regulados y controles más estrictos. En pocas palabras, más distorsiones de precios relativos (o inflación futura, el día que se corrijan).

**Lo que nos interesa, al margen del dato más reciente, es ver la relación inflación-depreciación**. Si comparamos nuestra serie de inflación de alta frecuencia contra la depreciación del tipo de cambio oficial, **veíamos hasta fines de 2019 un co-movimiento bastante claro**. Y no hace falta econometría para entender que la causalidad iba del tipo de cambio a la inflación. **O sea, saltos cambiarios tuvieron impacto inflacionario muy rápido y bastante importante** (alto "pass-through", en la jerga académica).

**Ahora bien, desde 2020 en adelante esa relación se ha debilitado significativamente.** La inflación se aceleró con el progresivo levantamiento de las restricciones por el Covid-19. Y, a pesar del uso del tipo de cambio como ancla nominal, la dinámica de los precios no aflojó. Todo lo contrario, como ya sabemos.

**Dejando de lado cuestiones estacionales o de precios regulados (por eso usamos la Core en el chart), lo que pasó fue que se agravaron fuertemente los desequilibrios macro durante la fase inicial de la pandemia (déficit fiscal récord, financiado casi enteramente con emisión). El deterioro macro impactó sobre las expectativas y ahora la dinámica inflacionaria empieza a tomar vida propia.** Hay alta inflación porque se espera que haya alta inflación. Que los sindicatos pidan reabrir paritarias 4 veces por año no es una señal alentadora, porque la nominalidad de la economía se vuelve más sensible a cualquier shock. Y sin plan (o con un "mal plan"), las cosas no van a resolverse.

**¿Y el tipo de cambio paralelo no juega en este partido?** Durante buena parte del período para el cual tenemos datos no parece haber agregado "combustible" a los precios (al menos por movimientos propios y no de seguir al tipo de cambio oficial), aunque en el último tiempo se nota cierto co-movimiento.

Tal vez haga falta analizar más en profundidad si hay un cambio de comportamiento y entender si ahora sí, los "precios siguen al blue".  En el mientras tanto, **el gobierno logró algo que no parecía posible: que la inflación se acelere sin haber tenido como disparador una depreciación fuerte del tipo de cambio. Y lo logró a base de crecientes desequilibrios macro que incluso un plan con el FMI no logra(rá) torcer.**

# Creating tables with Pipelines

Our Pipelines feature is a powerful tool which allows report automatization. Let's say, for example, that you want to create an insight which shows dynamics of Argentina FX rates and a table with latest data, including percent changes. Wait! Did you just say "a table"!? 

**With Pipelines you can transform datasets in multiple ways (for many other uses, see [here](https://www.alphacast.io/learn)). One possibility is to reduce the input dataset to a smaller version of itself, and then embed the outcome in an insight as a table.** Let's show you how to do it, step by step.

## How to create a table

1) To begin with, let's fetch the input dataset. This is the dataset we want to work on, which will be later reduced to a table. In our example, we'll be working with the [Financial - Argentina - FX premiums - Daily](https://www.alphacast.io/datasets/5288) dataset.

2) If the input dataset has columns which we want to discard, let's use the "Select" step to keep only what we need for our table. In this case, it will be columns associated with the different FX rates (Blue, Dolar MEP, Dolar CCL, Dolar Mayorista, Dolar Oficial). Feel free to skip this step if you don't need to filter columns.

3) Our dataset now has the required variables, but it is shown "unstacked". That is, all variables are columns of our dataset. We need to stack them in order to make some calculations and then reduce its dimension. For that, we will use our "Manual Configuration" step and include the following code:

4) Once melted, publish the output as a [new dataset](https://www.alphacast.io/datasets/23164), which will be used in a second pipeline.

5) Create a new pipeline and fetch the new dataset, which has the variables we need but stacked one above the other. Before making any calculation, we need to use the "Regroup Entities" step, in order to have only Date and Variable as the dataset's entities.

6) Now we can make any calculations we want. In our example, we are calculating daily, monthly and YTD percent changes using the "Apply Transform" step and then use the "Rename Variables" step, but feel free to experiment other alternatives!

7) Here comes the tricky part. We want a table that updates automatically and shows the latest available data. So, we need to use our "Manual Configuration" step again, this time to tell the pipelines engine only to keep the latest data.

8) Now we have a reduced dataset, which looks very much like a table! If you want, you can continue applying different steps or directly publish the outcome as [another dataset](https://www.alphacast.io/datasets/23165).

9) Finally, embedding the table in an insight. Create a new insight and use the following snippet. Remember to change DATASETID with the dataset ID (for those who don't remember, the ID can be found in the corresponding dataset's URL).

# Automatización de Análisis de Coyuntura – Clase 3
## Integración con Python, Excel, Google Drive y Power BI

En la clase 2 se cubrieron temas relacionados con el **data flow: cómo usar los pipelines y transformar los datos** dentro de la plataforma. **Hoy vamos a ver cómo integrar Alphacast a otras herramientas** de uso cotidiano en el proceso de análisis. La idea es explicar cómo hacerlo mediante ejemplos, construyendo sobre la base de lo que hacemos en cada sección.

### 1. Integración con Google Drive

La integración con Google Drive nos permite trabajar localmente y actualizar datasets en la plataforma de manera ágil y sencilla. El detalle del paso a paso lo pueden revisar [aquí](https://www.alphacast.io/p/luciano/insights/2022-2-3-GgrRgP).

Vamos a cargar un dataset ya preparado de antemano, con una serie de variables:

- IPC CABA (regulados y general).
- IPC INDEC (regulados y general).
- Tipo de Cambio (mayorista, promedio mensual, BCRA).
- Salarios registrados del sector privado (MTEySS, completado con var YoY de INDEC).

La idea es utilizar algunas de estas variables para construir un nuevo indicador y contrastarlo contra el IPC de CABA y el del INDEC. Vamos a cargar este dataset a un repositorio creado para la ocasión.

### 2. Integración con Python

En esta etapa vamos a usar la librería de Alphacast para descargar el dataset que integramos vía Google Drive anteriormente. Con ese dataset vamos a crear un IPC sintético (para detalles, ver [acá](https://www.alphacast.io/p/MaiaM/insights/2022-2-4-jtVuvw)) y cargaremos el resultado nuevamente en la plataforma, como un dataset nuevo.

**Weekly inflation remained relatively stable, though at high levels**. Consumer prices increased 1% WoW (slightly lower than the previous 1.2% WoW -revised-), and its monthly printing was 3.5% MoM (down from previous 3.7% MoM -revised-). Furthermore, the interannual inflation rate was 56.9% YoY (down from previous 57.1% YoY -revised-).

**Food and Beverages weekly prices rose at a rapid though stable pace.** Our monitoring of Food & Beverages shows a weekly variation of 1.4% WoW, the same as the previous week, and its monthly variation fell to 4% MoM (vs previous 4.9% MoM -revised-).

**The distribution of price changes keeps changing.** The fraction of our monitored prices increasing 4% or more per month rose slightly to 26% (vs previous 24%). A further 17% of prices are increasing between 2-4% per month (vs previous 15%) and the fraction of prices increasing below 2% per month fell to 57% (vs previous 61%).

## [SAMPLE] Output recovers to pre-pandemic level

**Economic activity recovered in August, reaching pre-pandemic levels.** Official data reported an increase of 1.1% MoM in July (seasonally adjusted), with interannual comparisons showing the economy up 12.8% YoY. In consequence, output is 0.28% above its pre-pandemic level (January 2020) and remains just 1.9% below early 2019 levels. **Data for September is scarce, although several major sectors, such as Construction (per the Construya Index and Cement sales) or Manufacturing (according to [electricity demand](https://www.alphacast.io/p/MaiaM/insights/2021-9-4-KaFvqV) data) have shown signs of further improvement.**

**Recovery is clearly moving on two tracks.** As has been previously noted (see [here](https://mailchi.mp/seido-web/seido-weekly-report-n61-0221839?e=e7f534b493)), the recovery of economic activity has occurred and will continue occurring at two different speeds. **Goods-producing activities (Manufacturing, Agriculture, Mining, and Electricity, Gas & Water) are not only above pre-pandemic levels (+5.5% vs January 2020) but are also operating above 2019 capacity as well** (+1.25% vs January 2019). Meanwhile, **the Services sector (Construction, Retail, Hotels & Restaurants, etc.) has not recovered from the pandemic recession yet** (- 1.7% vs 2020), or from the previous recession for that matter (-3.3% vs 2019).

**The same trends can be seen in employment.** The Goods sector was 1.3% above January 2020 levels of employment in July, whereas the Services sector remained 2.6% below the same level. Although total private registered employment remains below 2020 levels, not to mention 2019 levels, it will continue recovering. Public employment has increased compared to prior levels, and self-employment has more than recovered, resulting in total registered employment being slightly above pre-pandemic levels.

**Goods sector performance to be determined by trade requirements. So far, import growth has outpaced the economic recovery, with total imports up 22% compared to 2019.** Import growth has, so far, been determined by production inputs: Intermediate goods, Capital goods, and Parts & Accessories, with Fuels taking a secondary role. **This could be caused by various reasons: a more appreciated real exchange rate, the wide FX premium and overbuying to compensate for past (and future) restrictions. Regardless, recent restrictions and potential shortfalls on the export side (decreasing global commodity prices and slowing Brazilian demand) could prevent real output to increase much further.**

**Services performance to be determined by purchasing power and Delta variant.** The recovery of the service sector will be precarious but contingent on avoiding a third wave of the Coronavirus (like the ones observed in developed nations) and on reducing inflation's impact on purchasing power. **Regarding the pandemic, cases have reached their lowest levels in months, and the once sluggish vaccination drive seems to have been a success. However, a third wave (particularly in the winter) cannot be discounted**, and containment measures that could accompany it would disproportionately impact contact-intensive services once again. **As for purchasing power, inflation-adjusted wages are 11.1% below 2019 levels, and 8.2% below for registered workers, despite recent acceleration of nominal (and real) wage growth.** Short-term inflation dynamics will be a key determinant for the recovery of Services, and the economy as a whole.

## Subsidies in 2022 and tariff adjustment

**One of the main topics to be discussed with the IMF, if an arrangement is to be signed, will be the magnitude of a fiscal adjustment.** Within this adjustment, we estimate that **one of the most conflictive issues will be the level of energy subsidies.**

To contextualize, Minister Guzmán tried this year to maintain the level of subsidies at 1.7% GDP (2020's level). He announced that goal in an interview with CNN.

**If he had wanted subsidies to remain at 1.7% GDP**, in 2021 he would have had to spend ARS 360 billion less than the ARS 1.1 trillion that the item will end up costing. To put things differently, **subsidies spending should have increased 52% YoY and not 132% YoY, as we estimate will happen.**

To save those ARS 360 billion in subsidies spending, **Guzmán should have increased energy rates by 78% throughout the year**. With such an increase, subsidies spending would have remained at 1.7% GDP and demand would have paid an average of 58% of the energy price, instead of the 36% that it will end up paying in 2021 (against 54% paid in 2020 and 64 % in 2019).

**These numbers are a clear example of the imbalance that the "tariff freeze" is generating.** Its consequences spill over onto the fiscal deficit and its financing; the monetary printing and the FX premium; and the widening energy trade deficit and its effect on the foreign currency shortage.

On the other hand, **the decision to freeze tariffs "helped" reduce inflation figures.** A 78% increase of energy tariffs in 2021 would have directly added 4 percentage points to this year's inflation rate. Furthermore, consumption of other goods and services would have suffered and, consequently, GDP growth would have been lower.

Beyond these observations, **discussions with the IMF involving a fiscal adjustment will likely center on the magnitude of reduction in subsidies spending. Even more so considering that practically the entire primary deficit could be explained by economic subsidies**: in 2021, this item will represent more than 90% of the primary deficit.

**If Guzmán's plan for 2022 is to maintain unchanged (compared to 2021) the spending on energy subsidies relative to GDP** (2.5%, higher than the Minister's previous target), we should expect:
- a) **A 50% YoY increase of spending on energy subsidies in 2021**.
- b) Demand paying 32% of the energy price.
- c) **An end-of-period tariff increase of 50% YoY.**

**Higher adjustments on subsidies spending would require steeper tariff increases**, as shown in the chart below:

**Solvencia**: acreedores esperan que el sector público realice pagos futuros con un valor presente (al menos) igual al stock de deuda. <ins> Credibilidad es clave</ins>.

La **Restricción Presupuestaria** intertemporal del gobierno consolidado es:

Se trata de una evaluación actual sobre cuestiones del futuro. Incertidumbre.

Pocas dudas cuando deuda es muy baja o muy alta. ¿Y en el rango intermedio?

Credibilidad afecta el costo de deuda, pero también solvencia y acceso al mercado.

- Medidas hoy que aseguren futuros ajustes fiscales.

- Signaling:
- - Construir reputación (Reinhart et al, 2003). No sirve siempre.

## Antes de arrancar: ¿Quiénes somos y qué hacemos?

Soy Matías Carugati, formo parte del equipo de Luciano Cohan en Seido y Alphacast. Parecen lo mismo pero no lo son! Hoy vengo a hablar de macro (Seido), pero apoyándome en la flexibilidad de la plataforma (Alphacast). 

Alphacast es una plataforma de trabajo colaborativo para Economía y Finanzas. Queremos que piensen en nosotros como un “Github para Economistas”. La plataforma puede utilizarse sin costo alguno. Te armás una cuenta y ya estás listo para usarla.

## ¿Qué pueden hacer en Alphacast? Muchas cosas!

2. Armar gráficos interactivos y de actualización automática, que pueden usarse luego para presentaciones, informes, compartir en redes sociales, etc.

4. Armar reportes y presentaciones para compartir con quien quieras.

### **COVID: Mejor que ayer, peor que mañana**

Argentina está entre los países con más casos y muertes por Covid-19, con una mejora en las últimas semanas. La campaña de vacunación avanza, aunque las segundas dosis se hacen esperar (por ahora). Esto permite evitar un endurecimiento de las restricciones.

### **Fiscal: Buenos resultados (esperable)**

Buen desempeño fiscal en H1, apoyado en recuperación, mayor presión tributaria, precios internacionales más altos y el impuesto extraordinario a la riqueza. Del lado del gasto, ajuste en algunas “líneas sensibles” por inflación. Ojo que junio cortó la mejora. La estacionalidad del gasto, fragilidad de la recuperación y el empuje electoral van a presionar las cuentas del Tesoro.

Con los dólares de la soja refuerzan el atraso cambiario, intervienen en el MEP/CCL y relajan importaciones.

## ¿Y entonces?

Simulamos la dinámica monetaria hacia adelante con algunos supuestos de crecimiento, inflación, déficit fiscal, financiamiento de mercado y demanda de dinero. Suponemos dominancia fiscal, con lo cual lo que no se cubre con deuda lo pone el BCRA.

No somos “monetaristas ultramontanos” pero es evidente que el desequilibrio monetario hoy es el más relevante. Para una muestra … ¡ver la brecha cambiaria! Refleja por dónde se escapan los pesos no demandados.
